Fun for a Friday!

Happy Friday Paleo Comfort Foods friends!

We’ll keep this one short, sweet, and to-the-point.

WE ARE THRILLED TO ANNOUNCE..a handy dandy new and improved Paleo Comfort Foods Table of Contents!

That’s right, you asked, we answered. Now you get to print this off and keep it with your copy of Paleo Comfort Foods to locate what favorite recipes are on what pages that much more easily! The process was a little more involved than we had hoped (namely because we redid the TOC for the latest printing of Paleo Comfort Foods, which changed ALL the page numbers in the book). Needless to say, we had to then retrograde the TOC for the “original” editions of the book. Not that big a deal, but on top of everything else…well, you get the point. In other good news, also, a new and improved Paleo Comfort Foods Index will be coming out very soon too, and we’ll make that available here as well.

Paleo Comfort Foods - Table of Contents

Here’s the thing: I’m not technologically savvy. No really, I’m not. I’m probably way closer to our caveman ancestors in that regard, and I still think the iPhone has magical powers. Don’t even get me started on folks who have the 4S. That is some serious 5th dimension stuff. I digress. This is just my way of saying: I don’t own a Kindle or Nook, so I’m not sure how updates on those work. I really don’t know if “pushes” or “updates” happen. If someone wishes to enlighten me on these magical devices, I’m all in.

So how do you download the new Paleo Comfort Foods Table of Contents? See that picture over there??? >>>>>>
Go and click on it, and you’ll be prompted to download the PDF. You should be good to go from there, but if not, give a holler.

Thank you for your patience with us during our learning how to make our book better. We took so much of your feedback to make the 3rd printing a ton better – and we are so thankful for your continued support of Paleo Comfort Foods!

Now, as if this new TOC wasn’t gift enough, we’re gonna have a kick ass giveaway coming up. Yep, I said a curse word. But really, it is that awesome. If I was eligible to enter this next contest, I would. Hope that apprehension and excitement over the newest Paleo Comfort Foods is enough to keep you occupied over the weekend! Have a great weekeend!

  1. Regarding the Kindle updates, when you update the ebook file, I believe Amazon customer service will send an email to anyone who has purchased the book, informing them that there’s a new version available. If they want the updated book. customers just reply to the email that Amazon has sent and, the next time they sync their device, the old version will be deleted and the new version sent to their device.

Congrats on the book and, as a reader, thank you for being open to feedback (because not everyone is) and thanks for taking action (because even fewer will do that).

  2. Beautiful, and it fits the cookbook perfectly! BUT, to print at home, it uses SO MUCH ink. Can you supply a simpler B&W version for those of us who bought the cookbook? Thanks.

    • Hi D’Ann – the first (more immediate) solution might be for you to specify in your print settings black and white and a “draft” printing (uses far less ink). I used to do this all the time in printing my Delta boarding passes (prior to the smartphone generation!). I’ll simultaneously check with the designer on getting a pared down version, but that might be a few days. Thanks for the feedback.

Hi. I’ve picked up your book a few times and am interested in buying it, but then I noticed for your biscuit recipe, it essentially just says to scoop the batter onto the baking sheet and bake. It doesn’t say how big they should be (which affects how long you bake them for) or how many you should get out of the batter (there’s no yield for recipes). Is this being corrected in future printings? It’s made me hesitate buying the book, which I’d love to do as I think you guys come up with great Paleo recipes you can’t find anywhere else.

    • Hi DJDeeJay – thanks for dropping us a line. You’ve raised a great point, and one we pondered way back when we were writing the book. We contemplated “serving sizes”, but because a serving for every individual is going to change based on hunger, whether they are 300# or 100#, whether they just worked out, whether they are a kid vs. adult, we opted not to include serving size. In talking with friends, we’re going to be working on including “yield” in a future (as yet not printed) release, to say things like “yields 4 – 6ounce servings” or “yields approximately 6-8 1 1/2 inch wide biscuits (I think – don’t have my notes in front of me so am guessing).” Even with something like biscuits, it will depend on how flat you make them vs. how high you pile the dough up on them and if you gently folded the eggs in. I think we’re best off providing approximations, but trying to get exact on some of these things will have great variability depending on many factors. The good news is that most of the times, a little intuition will help in determining the yield. For example, a recipe that calls for 2 pounds of chicken – if you’re basing your servings on 4 ounce portions, then you can approximate that you’ll get 8 servings out of that. Concerning baked goods, again it will vary. Things like our Morning Glory Muffins yield (in our house) about a dozen “filled up pretty high” muffins. We’re always looking for ways to improve and make our book even better (like the revised index and Table of Contents!) and we welcome feedback on these things. And we’re ALWAYS an e-mail away to help provide approximations until a newer version might be out!

        Hi Jules,

Thanks so much for your reply. As far as portion sizes, I totally understand. What might be one portion for you might not be for me.

But since baking is more of a science, baking recipes are different, right? To your point, wouldn’t the recipe give us an idea on sizes and whether to leave them flat or pile them high? Something like: “Using a 1/4 cup measure, scoop the dough onto your baking sheet, then flatten gently with the palm of your hand.” You know, or something like that. Or for muffings, most muffin recipes I see/use say something along the lines of, “fill the muffin cups [halfway up, 3/4 of the way full, etc.].”

It’s obviously much easier said than done. But as someone who bakes a lot and doesn’t want to experiment too much due to the cost of almond and coconut flour, I was hoping for more specific direction.

But again, thanks for your reply and for making yourselves so accessible! It’s very much appreciated.

  4. According to Amazon there is no Kindle update available as of yet.

    • Sarah – let me check with our publisher on that. According to our publisher that update should have been released, but I’ll want to make sure. Thank you for bringing that to our attention.

Thanks Julie and Charles — I’ve saved this as a PDF in my computer and from there I sent a copy to my @ freekindle.com mail account which means I will now see it on my Kindle as a separate PDF file. My understanding of the kindle is that Amazon should be able to make updates available to people who’ve already bought the book but I’m not sure how you make that happen. – I certainly haven’t received any e-mails announcing any updates. Even so the new TOC as a separate file is still a huge help.
    Thanks for providing it.

  6. When are the books with the updated TOC and index going to be available? I want to purchase the book, but would rather wait until the updated one is out… because I know I would constantly misplace loose papers! :)

    • Hi Stacy, Unfortunately, we don’t have a clear-cut way of knowing from the retailers (B&N, Amazon) when they will be distributing version 3.0. They’ll likely want to go through any existing copies they have now, then distribute the new ones once those are out. Perhaps (if you have a local B&N near you), check in with them from time to time? Or do what we do: tape the TOC into our book!

    Hi Jules,

I wanted to follow up with you about the Kindle update. Amazon says it doesn’t exist. Can you check up on this?
